Biologic Infusions for the Treatment of RA and PA

For many patients who live with rheumatoid (RA) or psoriatic arthritis (PA), winter is more than just a change in seasons. Cooler temperatures lead to flare ups, resulting in pain and stiffness. For patients with moderate RA or PA who no longer respond to oral treatment, biologic infusions may be able to alleviate their symptoms.

Why do arthritis symptoms flare up in the winter?

Scientists aren’t exactly sure why cold weather exacerbates arthritis symptoms, but there are a few theories. The first theory centers around barometric pressure. It’s a term used to describe the pressure of the air around us. Cool air, such from an impending cold front, causes pressure to drop. It’s thought that the drop in pressure gives already inflamed tissue room to expand and become swollen.

A second theory has to do with blood flow. When internal body temperature drops, the body draws blood into your core in an effort to protect your major organs. With less warm blood surrounding the joints, these parts of the body are left out in the cold.

How Biologic Infusions Can Help

Biologic medications are genetically engineered to mimic the actions of your immune system. While many drugs take a generalized approach to treating symptoms, biologics are able to target specific inflammation responses linked to RA and PA. Because they are considered “large-molecule” drugs, biologics have to be administered directly into the bloodstream rather than taken orally. However, the long-term effects of biologic treatments can be life-changing. In some cases, biologic medications not only treat arthritis symptoms, but also prevent the disease from progressing.

How long does it take to receive a biologic infusion and how long will it last?

It depends on the medication. The actual time it takes to receive the infusion ranges from one to a few hours. Infusions can be administered in one of our spa-like suites at our clinic, or in the comfort of your own home by one of our experienced infusion nurses. Unlike oral medications, which need to be taken every day, infusions can last anywhere from six to eight weeks.

Health Care Medical Infusion Specialties provides infusion services, durable medical equipment and HyVIta infusions to the entire state of Mississippi.
