In October, We Celebrate Pharmacy Week!

At Health Care Medical Infusion Specialties, we have a full-service onsite pharmacy and staff to serve your medication needs and questions. During the week of October 20-26, we celebrate Pharmacy Week and honor our pharmacists and staff for all they contribute to the well-being of our patients.

According to the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists (ASHP), National Pharmacy Week is a time to recognize the significant contributions pharmacists and pharmacy technicians make to the healthcare team and their leadership in ensuring that the patients at your hospital and health system receive optimal outcomes from their medications.

The first National Pharmacy Week was observed in 1925! The pharmacist noted to have pioneered National Pharmacy Week was Robert J. Ruth of North Carolina. Initially, the week was founded to remind all pharmacists about their commitment to their Code of Ethics which stated they must be devoted guardians of the public’s health and welfare. It also aimed to educate residents about the standing pharmacist in their community and their role in care.

The role of the pharmacist has greatly evolved over time, especially with advancements in types of medications and treatments available for many conditions. While pharmacists have always compounded and dispensed medications, more recently, they have been charged with additional clinical services, such as providing immunizations, and acting as a resource for questions about safety and drug information. In many cases, pharmacists become the patient’s drug therapy expert and a primary prescription advisor. With one in every two Americans taking at least one prescription drug in their lifetime, pharmacists are in demand and more important than ever to our nation’s healthcare system.

Pharmacists are educated on medication, so they are knowledgeable about the prescriptions they fill. They are advocates for patients when dealing with insurance companies and play a critical role in medication research and education.
