Start the Holidays Off on a “Healthy” Foot!

The holidays are a time for family, friends and fellowship, and since the season tends to be busy, healthy eating, exercising, proper hydration, and self-care tend to be pushed to the side. Here are some tips to start the holidays off right and enjoy the festivities, while keeping your health in check.

1. Keep up with exercise.

Usually, when people are under stress or times are hectic, the first thing to get put on the chopping block is regular exercise. There may not be time to do your typical workout but make sure to keep moving. If you can’t make time for an hour at the gym, make sure you get a good walk in. Don’t let the holiday season keep you from hitting those daily 10,000 steps!

2. Eat healthily.

Holiday foods are indulgent, but it’s important to remember that most things are okay in moderation. Don’t overdo it and investigate healthy alternatives to your family’s high calorie favorites. You’d be surprised at how many calories you can save by using skim milk instead of whole and using sugar substitutes among other things. Research has shown that cardiac death is almost five percent higher during the holidays than the rest of the year. This is in part due to the consumption of unhealthy foods. You may also want to fill up on healthy foods like fruits and vegetables first, then enjoy a few holiday treats.

Don’t forget about your water intake either! Eight glasses a day will help you feel fuller and maintain hydration.

3. Consume alcohol in moderation.

While some extra drinks during the holidays may help you relax, alcohol is a harmful substance, so you must remember to watch your intake. Don’t overdo it, so you can enjoy your company during this special time of year.

4. Sleep!

Have you been awake cooking recipes and decorating? Take steps to get enough sleep if you are finding yourself in a sleep deficit. The National Institutes of Health recommend that adults sleep between 7 and 9 hours a night. If you aren’t quite able to reach that goal, make sure you nap to compensate.

5. Keep things clean.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), December and January are peak months for flu activity in the United States. The CDC also reports that colds are most common during the fall and winter. Get your flu vaccine and when in doubt, wash your hands!

6. Take some time for yourself.

Even though the holidays are meant for togetherness, it’s okay to take a break for some alone time and self-care. The simple task of making time to read or adding steps to your skin care routine can make all the difference. One great way to make some relaxing time for yourself is to visit us for a HyVIta! It will allow you to recharge while bringing your body back to its natural balance.
